Our LCL sea freight services

Planned and flexible LCL departures

For groupage shipping services, we consolidate individual shipments and load them into a full container (FCL). This ensures optimum container utilisation and reduces transport costs compared with a full container shipment. Through long-term planning of consolidation containers, customers can schedule their preferred departures in advance while also maintaining the flexibility to book at short notice.

Consolidation containers

For shipments that do not generate enough volume to fill an entire container, DACHSER offers consolidation containers. With an LCL shipment, you book a partial load within a full container and you only pay for the space your goods actually occupy. As consolidation containers are often prioritised during loading compared with full containers, this transport option is particularly suitable for fast and efficient sea freight shipping.

Port-to-port services

Within our global transport network, we operate consolidation services with secured capacities and direct connections between ports around the world. Regular departures, for example between Hamburg and Shanghai, ensure a continuous flow of goods between continents.

Direct services

In addition to intercontinental port-to-port transport, we also operate direct import services to rural locations and major European economic centres. Every week, LCL consolidation containers travel from locations such as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Ningbo not only to European seaports but also directly to destinations including Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Basel, Budapest and Prague.

DACHSER logistics centres

For loading and unloading consolidation containers, we primarily use our own facilities within the European groupage network. By avoiding heavily congested container freight stations at seaports and using optimised customs procedures, you benefit from shorter transit times and high handling quality.

We also minimise the risk of freight damage because cargo is unloaded at a DACHSER logistics centre and transferred directly into our European road transport network without additional handling or diversions.

Track & Trace

Thanks to shipmentcontrol, our web-based cargo tracking platform, you can monitor the progress of your LCL sea freight shipments in real time. shipmentcontrol supports seamless shipment tracking across both distribution logistics (shipmentcontrol send) and procurement logistics (shipmentcontrol collect).

Frequently asked questions about LCL sea freight

What is LCL shipping?

LCL stands for Less Than Container Load. The less than container load meaning refers to sea freight shipments whose cargo volume is too small to fill an entire container.

To optimise transport costs, container utilisation and transit times, shipments from multiple customers are consolidated into a shared container as part of LCL shipping and consolidated shipping services.

What is the difference between LCL and FCL sea freight?

FCL stands for Full Container Load. Unlike less than container load shipments, an FCL shipment uses the entire container for the cargo of a single customer.

Transport costs for FCL services are generally charged per container, regardless of how much of the container space is actually used. By contrast, customers using LCL shipping only pay for the space occupied by their cargo

Why is LCL sea freight becoming increasingly important in global logistics?

Globalisation and constantly changing market conditions create significant challenges for businesses. Despite production bottlenecks and fragile supply chains, manufacturers must move goods faster, more flexibly and more cost-effectively in order to remain competitive.

As a result, many companies are increasingly relying on LCL sea freight and freight consolidation services. Consolidation containers not only provide a cost-effective solution for smaller shipments, but often enable faster shipping because there is no need to wait until sufficient cargo is available to fill an entire container.

Another advantage is that customers avoid the need to load and unload full containers at their own facilities, reducing handling effort for both shippers and consignees. In addition, departures are typically planned weeks in advance, providing businesses with planning reliability while still allowing last-minute bookings.

What are the benefits of LCL shipping?

Flexibility: Businesses only pay for the transport capacity they actually require. This allows them to respond more flexibly to demand while maintaining a continuous flow of goods. LCL shipments can often be booked at short notice.

Planning reliability: Regular departures and secured capacities provide a high degree of planning certainty. In addition, consolidation containers are often prioritised during the loading process.

Risk reduction: In times of fragile supply chains, many organisations distribute cargo across multiple consolidation containers and sailings. If an unexpected delay or schedule change affects one vessel, cargo flows can still be maintained through alternative departures.

Sustainability: The use of environmentally responsible transport solutions and maximum container utilisation make LCL transport a more sustainable option than partially loaded full-container shipments.

What influences LCL shipping costs?

The cost of LCL shipping depends on several factors, including:

  • Cargo volume and weight
  • Route and destination
  • Required transit time
  • Seasonal market conditions
  • Additional logistics services
  • Warehousing requirements
  • Customs clearance services
  • Collection and delivery services

Because customers only pay for the space they use within a consolidation container, LCL shipping costs are often an economical solution for smaller shipment volumes.

What are typical LCL transit times?

LCL transit times vary depending on origin, destination, carrier schedules and consolidation requirements.

Because cargo from different shippers must first be consolidated, transit times can occasionally be longer than for full-container transport. However, regular scheduled departures, secured capacities and DACHSER’s integrated network help maintain reliable and predictable transport performance

How does LCL shipment tracking work?

Using shipmentcontrol, DACHSER's web-based cargo tracking platform, customers benefit from real-time shipment tracking throughout the transport process.

The system provides end-to-end visibility for both distribution logistics and procurement logistics, enabling comprehensive supply chain visibility and full transparency across international LCL shipping operations.
