Chinese New Year: Impact on logistics

In 2021, Chinese New Year falls on February 12, it is the biggest festival in China where people celebrate the beginning of a new year with their families. The week-long national public holiday has consequences on global supply chains. The following information provides an overview of some key facts of the festival and its possible impacts on logistics. Dates and key facts February 12, 2021 marks the start of the Chinese New Year (the year of Ox). Chinese national holiday begins on February 11 and ends on February 17, meaning that most of the businesses, including DACHSER branches in China, will be closed and resumes on February 18. Factories and manufacturing sites used to be closed for a longer period of time. Production might pause already one week before Chinese New Year, some factories will only resume one month after. The long holiday allows workers in the city to travel back to their hometown for a family reunion, though it might not be the case this year due to the pandemic. Impact on supply chain Extensive holidays in China can lead to delays to your shipments for up to one month. Due to the abovementioned closing period of manufacturing industries, there will be no productions from China for at least a week. Even though factories will be restarting gradually, operations will not resume to full swing immediately. Productions from other countries in Asia will also be impacted as some parts might come from China or the assembling processes are done there. Most shippers will stock up inventories that are sufficient to cover the Chinese New Year period, this leads to a pre-holiday cargo rush; it will also take some time after the festival to normalize the market conditions. Get prepared To avoid unnecessary price hikes and delays, it is strongly recommended to place bookings well in advance. At DACHSER, our logistics experts can help you to plan together. Feel free to discuss with us about your needs and we can work out the best to maintain your supply chain uninterrupted throughout the Chinese New Year. To mark the occasion: update of our Brexit checklist

The EU withdrawal of the United Kingdom was completed on 31.01.2020. Currently we are in a transition phase which ends on 31.12.2020. A further extension of this transitional phase should have been agreed until 01.07.2020 and is therefore no longer possible. Thus, the United Kingdom will no longer be part of the internal market and the customs union as of 01.01.2021. If no agreement is reached between the UK and the EU in the remaining time of the transition phase, trade would in future fall under the rules of the World Trade Organization. We at DACHSER cannot influence the political situation in the UK, but we can prepare you in the best possible way for regulated customs procedures. We have therefore adapted and updated our Brexit checklist to the current circumstances. You can download it here free of charge. If you have any questions, please get in touch with your responsible contact person at the respective DACHSER branch

“When it comes to Brexit, many companies have their head in the sand”

The Brexit is complete and the transition phase will be history in a few weeks. No matter what agreements the EU and Great Britain may reach in the short term, January 1, 2021 will mean a deep cut for the movement of goods to and from Great Britain. Steffen Wiese, Head of Sales, European Logistics, North Central Europe at DACHSER, explains what companies urgently need to bear in mind and some even run the risk of oversleeping the preparations. Would you say it’s still possible to avoid a hard, no-deal Brexit? How would a hard Brexit affect goods transport involving the UK? There’s still a chance that a deal could be agreed. But the closer we get to the deadline, the less hope there is. DACHSER is definitely readying itself and its customers for a hard Brexit to ensure we’re prepared for all eventualities. Post-Brexit customs clearance will make transporting goods vastly more complicated, expensive, and time-consuming. We expect a hard Brexit to majorly disrupt transports, especially at the beginning of next year. We’re noticing that some companies have already taken action and have moved operations to locations with the EU. In light of new customs clearance procedures, some business models are no longer very practical and will have to be revised. B2C shipments will become more expensive, even if simpler procedures are introduced for goods of up to a certain value. It just won’t be worth it for many senders. Since shipping times and costs for supplying the European market from the UK will also increase, many senders have already moved their distribution centers to the EU. Are companies, including DACHSER customers, in Germany and the rest of Europe prepared? Where do you see room for improvement? In addition to the well prepared companies, there are also quite a few that still need to take urgent action. They’ve waited too long, which will lead to problems—at the latest starting January 1. This holds especially true for companies that have up to now exclusively served the European domestic market, as they often lack the requisite customs expertise. Many companies actually expect that a deal will mean everything remains as it is. What’s more, the Covid-19 pandemic has largely eclipsed Brexit as a topic in the public eye as well as at many companies. But it’s important to know that no matter what happens on the political stage over the coming days and weeks, customs clearance will definitely be a hot topic among senders and recipients of goods transported between the EU and the UK. This means that preparation is non-negotiable. A more general question: What must a company intending to export goods to or import them from the UK as of January 1, 2021 take into account? Senders first have to check the extent to which their supply chains are affected. Special attention must be paid to preparing the information and documents required for customs clearance so that we, in our role as logistics provider, can take care of the customs formalities relating to imports and exports. This information includes the EORI number. Moreover, obtaining customs authorization from the respective importer is essential for processing shipments to and from the UK. For this reason, we are asking our customers to notify their recipients that they must provide us with the importer’s name so we can request the necessary authorization. DACHSER itself is well prepared to make future customs clearance for goods transports between the EU and the UK as smooth as possible. It’s now up to senders to once again check thoroughly that they have made all necessary preparations. On our website, we’ve published a checklist that allows our customers to see at a glance what they have to be aware of. And of course, DACHSER’s local contact persons are always ready to answer any questions. It’s absolutely clear what the worst-case scenario would be: goods remain stuck with the sender and we are unable to collect them. The transport can start only once all the paperwork required for customs clearance has been made available. Starting January 1, there will be no transition period or exceptions and the paperwork cannot be submitted later. These are the conditions that logistics providers must now observe. In this worst-case scenario, customer warehouses would overflow as the goods remain where they are. What specific preparations has DACHSER made as a logistics provider? DACHSER has been preparing for Brexit for years now. We formed an internal project team made up of experts from all areas of the company. It’s this team’s job to address all aspects of Brexit—from customs clearance, volume monitoring, and traffic routing to IT, staffing, and communications. To prepare for all eventualities, we’ve invested particularly in customs and created software solutions to help ensure customs processes are performed efficiently. As well as adding resources to our IT infrastructure, we’re making sure that DACHSER UK and DACHSER Ireland both have sufficient personnel—especially those trained in customs matters. On the mainland, our global logistics network provides us with ample expertise and resources. We’ve also formed an internal task force to support our colleagues in the UK and Ireland as well as our distribution platforms in the EU starting January 1, 2021. Task force members are being trained on how the various systems work so we can stem any additional costs, and our country organizations are working closely together to minimize any disruption. And because we have AEO status in the UK and in numerous EU countries, we can see to it that goods clear customs as quickly and seamlessly as possible. What’s the situation in the Republic of Ireland? The majority of transports to and from Ireland pass through the Channel. Are there alternative routes? There are bound to be obstacles when transporting goods to Ireland. But what’s particularly unclear is how things will work with Northern Ireland, which as we all know is a very political issue. There are alternative routes to Ireland and while all options involving ferry companies are being explored, these will ultimately lead to longer transit times. After years of Brexit preparations, what lessons have you learned? It’s all about staying flexible in the face of inevitable surprises, especially political ones. Personally, I hope that the nightmare scenarios predicting thousands of trucks stranded on each side of the Channel don’t come true and that the authorities also do their part to implement the process efficiently. I’m also curious to see how the economy develops and whether Brexit will scare other countries away from pursuing any desire to leave.

Golden Week in China - October  2025

From October 1 to October 8, 2025, most businesses and factories in China will be closed for the National Day Golden Week holiday. As one of the world’s largest manufacturing hubs, this extended break may significantly impact global supply chains. Early preparation is key to minimizing potential disruptions. About Golden Week Golden Week is a 7-day national holiday in China that commemorates the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1. During this period, many people travel domestically or reunite with family. Like many other businesses, DACHSER in China will be closed from October 1 to October 8, 2025, and will resume normal operations on October 9, 2025. What to expect during the holiday? Factories and offices will largely suspend operations, resulting in a temporary halt in production. Airports and seaports will continue functioning but with reduced staffing due to lower cargo volumes. Government agencies, including customs, are typically closed during this holiday period, which may delay clearance processes. How to prepare and maintain supply chain efficiency? Given China’s pivotal role in global trade and manufacturing, this annual holiday period may influence logistics timelines and production schedules. To ensure continuity and reduce potential delays, we recommend the following actions: Coordinate with suppliers and customers to secure adequate inventory and align expectations. Share your shipment forecasts with us to support long-term planning and identify optimal logistics solutions. Sea freight: Service disruptions, including blank sailings, are anticipated. For LCL cargo movements, please stay closely connected with our office to stay informed of schedule changes and plan loading accordingly. Air freight: The cut-off time for Standard service is 12:00 noon on September 29, 2025, and for Speed/Express service, it is 12:00 noon on September 30, 2025. For further assistance or to discuss your logistics needs, please reach out to your regular DACHSER contact. We’re here to help you plan ahead and ensure a smooth transition through the holiday period.

Navigating the future of logistics in sub-Saharan Africa: opportunities and challenges

The potential for logistics in Sub-Saharan Africa is immense. With a population exceeding one billion and a rapidly growing middle class, consumer demand for goods and services is on the rise. According to the African Development Bank, the continent’s GDP is expected to grow by 3.4% in 2024, driven by increased consumer spending and improved business climates in key economies. Initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aim to boost intra-African trade by reducing tariffs and streamlining customs procedures. This agreement, covering 54 African countries, is creating a single market of 1.2 billion people with a combined GDP of over $3 trillion, offering unprecedented opportunities for growth. Investors are increasingly exploring opportunities in Africa across sectors such as energy, mining, construction, and logistics. As the global transition to renewable energy accelerates, Africa further has the potential to become a key hub for both renewable energy and critical minerals. The continent is rich in critical minerals vital for manufacturing renewable energy sources and possesses untapped natural gas fields. Effective integration of strategic logistics solutions is essential to fully unlock this economic potential. The opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for logistics in Africa present a unique landscape for growth and innovation. However, to harness this potential, we must address the inherent challenges with foresight and strategic planning. Opportunities abound The logistics sector in Africa is poised for significant advances due to several key factors. Firstly, the continent's infrastructure development is gaining momentum, with numerous investments targeting roads, railways, and ports to enhance connectivity. Improved transport networks will facilitate smoother distribution channels, allowing businesses to thrive. The rise of e-commerce in Africa is transforming the way goods are traded, creating a burgeoning demand for efficient logistics services. As more consumers turn to online shopping, companies must adapt their logistics strategies to support rapid delivery models. The adoption of technology in logistics—ranging from advanced tracking systems to automation—offers the potential for increased efficiency and reduced costs. Lastly, as African countries continue to embrace renewable energy solutions, there's an opportunity for sustainable logistics practices to emerge, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. Collectively, these opportunities signal a transformative era for the logistics landscape in Africa. Challenges to overcome Despite these opportunities, the logistics sector in Sub-Saharan Africa faces significant hurdles. One of the primary challenges foreign investors face in Africa is the underdeveloped infrastructure for logistics. The World Bank reports that less than 30% of the continent’s roads are paved, which exacerbates the costs and complexities of moving goods. This shortfall hinders the economically viable import and export of essential strategic goods and minerals needed to establish new markets and infrastructure. While large international corporations have recently made substantial investments across the continent, it is crucial for African nations to focus on upgrading and repairing existing supply chain assets, such as roads, railways, ports, and warehouses to enhance their capacity to attract further foreign investment. High logistics costs, exacerbated by inefficient port processes and a lack of digital solutions, remain a primary concern. Moreover, regulatory hurdles continue to impede the seamless flow of goods across the region. Inconsistent customs regulations and lengthy clearance times can lead to delays and increased costs, impacting the overall efficiency of supply chains. Inefficient port processes are critical nodes in the logistics network, and many African ports suffer from inefficiencies that lead to delays and increased costs. Modernising port infrastructure, implementing advanced management systems such as automated container handling, and real-time tracking could significantly enhance port efficiency. Additionally, while the potential of digital technologies is vast, their current adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa is slow, necessitating investments in technology and digital literacy to overcome these challenges. A strategic approach At DACHSER South Africa, we understand these challenges and are committed to providing intelligent logistics solutions that cater to the unique needs of the Sub-Saharan market. Our approach leverages technology and a deep understanding of the local market. We offer customised services such as air and ocean freight, contract logistics, and warehousing solutions tailored to specific industry needs. For instance, our expertise in automotive and healthcare logistics allows us to support these critical sectors with precision and reliability. Information security is a cornerstone of our operations. We have obtained TISAX® Level 2 certification, ensuring that our logistics processes meet the highest standards of data protection. This commitment to security helps safeguard our clients' supply chains and builds trust in our capabilities. Sustainability is also a key focus for DACHSER. We are actively working to reduce our carbon footprint through investments in energy-efficient technologies and more sustainable transport solutions. Since 2022, Dachser has been purchasing 100% green energy on a global level. By promoting eco-friendly practices, we aim to lead the charge towards a more sustainable logistics future in Africa. The future of logistics in Sub-Saharan Africa is bright, but realising its full potential requires a concerted effort to overcome existing challenges. By harnessing the region's opportunities and addressing its hurdles with innovative solutions, we're confident in our ability to drive growth and efficiency in this dynamic market as we work with our clients to navigate the complexities of the logistics landscape and unlock new avenues for success in Africa. The AfCFTA and regional cooperation will be vital in this transformation, connecting African markets and enhancing global competitiveness. Now is the time for businesses to invest in Sub-Saharan Africa; the potential for growth and development is immense, and with the right strategies in place, the region can become a global logistics powerhouse.
